BPA banned in Washington & Wisconsin

Two weeks ago we wrote about the FDA's shift in position over BPA. Weeks later two states have approved measures to ban BPA becoming the third and fourth states in the US to do so.

On January 25th Washington's House of Representatives passed a bill to ban of the use of BPA in food and drink containers intended for children under the age of 3. This is due to be effective on July 1, 2011.

FDA's shift in positon over BPA

Read more from the New York Times about the US FDA's major shift in positon over BPA. The agency announced last Friday that it had “some concern about the potential effects of BPA on the brain, behavior and prostate gland of fetuses, infants and children,” and would join other federal health agencies in studying the chemical in both animals and humans.

First U.S. Ban on BPA from New Year

As of 1st January 2010 Minnesota manufacturers and wholesalers are prohibited from selling baby bottles and sippy cups for use by children 3 and younger, that contain the chemical BPA (Bisphenol-A). Retailers will be prohibited from selling such children’s products with BPA from 1st January 2011.

In the USA - Chicago, Connecticut , Suffolk County NY have also agreed to ban BPA.
