BPA now linked to male infertility

This blog has previously highlighted research which linked between bisphenol-A (BPA) and low sex drive and impotence in males. A new 5-year study has now claimed that there is also a link between levels of BPA in the blood and male fertility. In the study, researchers at Kaiser Permanente in the US, tested 514 workers in factories in China and found that men with higher urine BPA levels were two to four times more at risk of having poor semen quality, including low sperm concentration, low sperm vitality and mobility.

BPA is bad for male pride!

It is widely known that the use of toxic chemicals such as bisphenol-A (BPA) in food containers has been linked to a number of health problems including cancer, heart disease and infertility – see The Independent article. But now new research has shown that exposure to BPA may suppress male hormones in the body and can make men impotent. Frank Sommer, a Berlin-based urologist, told The Telegraph newspaper that chemicals like BPA “could shift the balance of sex hormones in men towards oestrogen….[which] leads to less sexual drive.”

BPA could affect male hormone levels

A new US research study has concluded that bisphenol A (BPA) could be responsible for changing hormone levels in men. The paper, published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology, said BPA was detected in 89 per cent of urine samples and that men with higher urine BPA concentrations had follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and lower levels of inhibin B, both of which have been associated with poorer sperm quality.
